Missoni for Target

stayed up 2am PST waiting for Missoni to drop...it didn't...up at 6am, website issues, like:

- everything is in my cart, but the CC # won't stay put when entering the billing/shipping address

- a subtotal of $9,638.99 because it thinks I want 99 vases and 99 bikinis...

(i still want *a single* bikini but no dice unless they restock. the bikini that was in MY CART since 6am, grr)

-the #target #missoni #failDOG (you know who i mean)..12 hours later!

I drove down to the local target at 10:30amish (I'm not one to join in on a stampede...or stand in lines)...immediately greeted by an "actively ugly" green corduroy car coat, and a bunch of MOSSIMO instead of MISSONI filling the clothing racks. Spinning around, I see some eBayers or bigfans of the M with carts full, and empty shelves. One sad chevron platter with scratches in it, some canisters without their lids.

Then, I discover the candles, intact by some miracle, and a few vases. These were at the top-ish of my list, definitely the vases, so *yay*. I got one of each large and medium vase (unlike the lady behind me who took the whole lot) and a few candles for gifts... a couple wine boxes to use as wrappings, and the last sad notecard set. Overall the quality is quite nice, and spaced around the home I don't think it'll scream "I shopped at Target that fated morning"

Late late late this afternoon I ordered the matching glass tray (hope it arrives in one piece), the round ceramic platter that matches the melamine tray I so hope to find this weekend or on eBay, a couple handtowels, the black pleated maxi, and two small makeup cases.

wondering if the cupcake/tiered tray is cute enough to find on eBay, or how many hoards of visitors will be flocking to Target on saturday...

did you look for Missoni x Target today? wasn't the website outage uber annoying? what's on your list?

Chloe-esque wrap buckle boots

It's been almost a year since I was drooling over these classic Chloe boots ($1200 at Nordstrom, long soldout).

Well, good news for procrastinators, the Rosegold version is now on supersale, this weekend on amazon for $125 *BEFORE an additional auto 25% off* (I wish they had my size), and here at endless (additional 25% ends tomorrow and free ship/returns!). I got mine here at bluefly (with code RETAILMENOT30 for $30 off $150 for new customers!) for around $150.

I may still be holding out for an indian summer, but that doesn't mean I can't prepare for the glorious fall boot season :)

JCrew reviews Fall 2011

Sorry no links as I'm in transit but there are some links in earlier posts below with the photos from my 20% cardholder order. Will try to update later, but for now:

Vintage tweed jacket: wanted to love this but I don't think I would pick it up even if on super sale. Pros: love the mustard color, soft weave, fully lined, nice raw edge detail. Cons: boxy, to the point where I would keep my arms to my side and walk funny to avoid people seeing a side view, LoL. somehow I found the size 00 both restricting and too voluminous! I think it's the material - too thick to drape nicely, more of a coat material...and swing coat was sooooo NOT what I was looking for. Verdict: complete pass.

Technicolor tweed jacket: this on the other hand, as i reviewed on JCA, is amazing. Lovely colors, great lime green sleeve lining, fabulous details like fabric covering on the snap closures, but most of all: great classic fit that works dressed up or down (I prefer down at this point in my life, with distressed denim and messy hair, but I can see me wearing this in 30 years with pearls!). I got it my normal sz0 and the fit is great. The only minor drawback for me now is the shoulder pads are a little thick, but that can be taken out cor squished...

No. 2 pencil: finally snagged a camel colored pencil! I took a P2 for longevity plus that I will likely wear this to work more than to play and don't want it tight at all, but in the bright flame I think I would take a 00 or 0 to avoid the "orange mini" look. I am sticking to the camel only for now since that is a true basic and as much as I love the red orange going around, I've already bitten on the linen shirt, a top from H&M, and will probably pick up the Poppy King lippie. Don't want my whole closet to scream traffic cone orange of 2011.

Schoolboy blazers: got and love the striped version in a 00. Not a huge fan of the darker camel or navy - the fabric is thinner than past incarnations, so I only went for the stripes because I've been searching for a preppy gossip-girl esque striped blazer forever. I actively hate the light grey on my skin tone as well.

Hacking jackets- I love the flame color but the fabric was soooo much rougher than I anticipated. I compared it to the factory professor and the hacking is rougher and looks like it will have longevity issues. Wondeering if it's an in store thing. It was flying off the shelves, but I won't drink the crew lade on this one unless I feel some wool that is from a better batch...and it would have to be a much better batch. I don't like to bristle when I feel my clothing!

Icon trench in light khaki: now here is a great, classic item. I took a 0 and love the orange lining of the sleeves, the crisp, matte fabric, stand-up-ish collar pleating, belting details, and most of all: the cut is impeccable. Fits like a glove. The promo price is fabulous and I'm glad I snagged this one!

Mona pumps: agree with everyone is runs 1/2 size small and a little narrow maybe.

Vintage tweed no. 2: the weave on this is like the jacket, but unlike the jacket, you SIT on a skirt and I think the snagging would be problematic.

Plaid bucket hats: run a little small, but they are cute!

JCrew Wool Oxford Blazer lookalikes

how amazing would this blazer have been if i had only seen it before it sold out in red?

i ordered it in black and am going to swap out the buttons. finally sick of searching for the Zara, Joseph, and JCrew versions. Amen. The sizing is very different on yesstyle.com, just FYI - check it all in cm, and if you are a small size 00-4ish it might just work for you!
Will review when the loooong wait (end of August) is over.

Update: the blazers sold out/ order got cancelled. Sad face. I picked up a lightweight zara one on eBay (that I am not really sure is zara despite a zara tag), that will do the trick for now, but will keep an eye out for this winter's incarnations.

Review: Warehouse Pleated Trench from ASOS

The minute I saw this lovely dark camel Warehouse trench on ASOS, I bit the bullet at full price. Little miss Hermione and her Burberry ads have been on my brain for a few seasons and I've been in search of a pleated trench. I received it today and loooove it. Let me count the ways:

ASOS free shipping and returns, wahoo!
The fit - fab. Snug and fitted in the torso and arms (but can fit a sweater underneath) and just enough room without adding bulk in the oh-so-critical hip and rear area -- which is always a concern especially for a pleated design. Note the little schoolgirl type pleats in the back are different from the side (no pleats really) and front (a couple wider pleats). This keeps the design from being too frou-frou -- it's a lovely refined design I'd expect from Burberry or a high end anthropologie.
Great material - 88%poly + viscose so it's a "real" raincoat to wear in the rain, but it feels wonderful. I can't believe I'm saying that, because I normally despise the poly & ester twins, but the weave and heft to the fabric is just fantastic. It will keep me warm. It's also fulled lined in a light camel color.
Great details: the epaulets, leatherette contrast trim, hidden pockets, quality horn-esque buttons -- all fantastic.

I took a UKsz6 = US size2, their smallest size and it's perfect for wearing on top of a light sweater. If you're in the market for a pleated trench, I highly recommend trying this one out. The JCrew ethel trench was an awful mid calf length on me, but this hits above knee and is a great option, especially for petites.

JCrew IRL reviews - store-only tees

Here are a couple new arrival tees I've only seen in retail stores/ not online yet at least. Both are comfy, soft, and overpriced. The Harvey Calfield Boating Club Lake Erie, PA henley is cute (I'm wearing a XS, it comes in XXS), but just printed on as I recall and reminiscent of something you could get at American Eagle or Aeropostale.

The Pink Bleecker St Furies is cute as well, but I'm showing a XS and couldn't find a XXS. It was huge and at best maybe a slumber party top (if you feel like spending $36 on a slumber party top). <-- don't quote me on that, but I think it was $36ish. It was pinned to pieces on the mannequin (I really wanted to take a pic but it was right next to the cash registers). Shouldn't that be a sign - if you have to scrunch up half the fabric onto your manni, you should make the garment a little more fitted?!

Overall, I like the preppy / nautical theme to these, just was not loving the execution. Yes, we're tiring of sequins and ruffles and (gasp) sometimes stripes. where are those great language tees?

JCrew IRL reviews - pencil skirts

Paisley pencil in dark pumpkin and Mirabelle pencil in faded black reviews:

I tried on both of these new arrivals in store a couple weeks ago. It seems the crew is putting out limited sizes in store - these were the only 00/0/2's around. I tried on a Size 00 in both (my size of late, used to be a 0 and I haven't lost any weight). A big feature for petites - you might not need to get these hemmed (big yay for me) and you can try and buy in store. A drawback for nonpetites: there is actually a petite size, but if the petites are mooching on regular sizes, less for you, and not great for the tall ladies out there.

Here are my thoughts on both:
Paisley: Love the thick textured fabric. I have seen the recent Factory paisley skirt IRL and think the quality of this one is far superior. It has a heft to it, and unlike the printed cotton feel of the outlet palermo paisley skirt, this one's colors have more depth and vibrancy. I don't get a ton of items full price but this one had the pattern lining up nicely and the fit was great so it came home with me. The burnt orange and navy coloring is classic, and besides the pink/green paisley-ish mini from a couple years ago, I don't have any paisley skirts. I have also seen the silk dress in this print, but was not enamored by the ruffle and empire-waist-ish cut, but to each her own. It is a lovely sophisticated print.

Mirabelle skirt: The embroidery design is nice but I wasn't loving the thickish thread used (seems like it might snag) and I felt like the faded black color + cream embroidery wouldn't hold up well for handwashing -- it might look indeed "faded" pretty quickly. It seemed to run a smidge tighter than the paisley pencil. The length was great though for a petite - no hemming needed again. Overall I can see how some may like this design, but I felt the paisley was more unique and a nicer quality.

While I'm not blown away by the crew's spring-summer line so far, I have been partaking on a few classics - replacing some worn out staples in my wardrobe, and picking up a few special printed/embellished pieces that I think are subtle enough to fall in the "classic"-ish genre.

I must say I love the clean lines and the use of linen so far -- wrinkled up linen on the beach = love. I have a linen suit as well, and as long as you're ok with some wrinkles, it does feel great and add some breathability for those summer work events:

Anyhow, here are some recent quick reviews or items I just ordered and will review soon!:

1. Linen perfect shirt - I got this in white in a P0 and a P00. The petite is definitely for me, as this runs a little longer than most JCrew perfect shirts - which is great for a cover-up at the beach, but adds bulk if you want to pair it tucked into shorts or leave it untucked. There isn't a huge difference between the P0 and P00 -- so I'll be stalking all colors of this when it goes on sale (if it does...).

Apparently everyone else loves this too as my size is totally sold out at full price online for all colors except navy and yellow. I hope JCrew will continue to make this shirt every year, in more colors (can you imagine a beautiful deep turquoise with white denim, gah!) ...but in case they don't I'm planning to stock up this year!!

2. Factory perfect fit stripe boatneck tee - live in these.

Love. If the coral-white combo did me any favors I'd get that one too. It is just hands-down one of my most comfortable and flattering shirts. Feels like pajamas but looks casual-chic. I'm actually kinda debating trying the coral-white combo case it does work on me, but shipping back to factory is such a pain - I would order so much more if they allowed in-store returns at JCrew retail B&Ms. but that didn't stop me from getting the:

3. Palermo Paisley strapless cotton lawn top. (reg $54.50, on promo)

I'm seeing this for al fresco dinner parties with white denim. fingers crossed on the fit. This is classic jcrew for me. This is what factory does best - take a beloved print and reimagine it on other pieces for an encore performance.

--> find my review in the comments on JCA: I found the printed strapless to runTTS. I took my regular 0. If you are larger than a A/B cup you might want to size up. There is a bit of an a line to help the top flow over jeans etc but I didn't find it too boxy. The fabric is nice for summer - a cotton lawn, and the paisley print is really cute!

4. Beaded sweater cami - the texture and color of this are making me swoon. I hope it's as good IRL! This is "new jcrew" for me. I would argue with a cardi and dark jeans (or white for summer...everything looks better with white jeans!) and minimal-to-no accessories this can be classic in feel as well. A place in my heart for both!

Review: sadly I'm sized out of this one. I got the XXS and it was still loose and not easily altered. The beading is really pretty though, and will likely outlast the overly sequined trends, especially under a blazer. I just didn't want to buy another top that I could only wear under a blazer. Maybe it it was suuuupercheap, but tailor bills add up, and I wasn't feeling it for $70.

some recent acquisitions and reviews!

1. Striped Schoolboy Blazer - classic, fitted, lovely thin blue and white stripes with cute nautical brass tone buttons. love it. I tried this on in-store in a 0 (my normal size) and almost took it home at full price. It's not lined, which makes it great for hot summers and if you're looking for something light. I ended up ordering this online in a 00 with the 20% cardmembers code that just came out. Will report back on the sizing (it may be too tight, but I was curious and they don't carry 00 a lot in-stores). I guess some would say $95 is still a lot for a thin blazer, but I'm tired of the sale games and have recently missed out on some pieces that sold out. This is really classic and perfect to wear right now!

2. Natalie Studded Sweater - I blogged about this a while ago, and actually got it months ago in the navy. It was certainly popular - I couldn't find it in a XXS for the life of me, but have come to terms with the slouchiness of the XS because I love the look so much. At least I feel a little better that I haven't seen popbacks in my size since I ordered it :)

3. Clip elastic belt - very cute. runs very small (I'm usually the smallest size in belts designed for the waist and the S/M was pretty snug).

4. Perfect shirt in linen. I tried on some of the linen slouchy pullovers in store and was underwhelmed (too baggy), but I'm hopeful with the petite0 and petite00 perfect shirts - I have a fitted white linen button down that I wear to death in the summer and am in need of a replacement! There is seriously nothing better. Imagining myself wearing this in Venice on a September evening....

Other quick impressions from the B&M:

the fedoras are rather tall or designed for being low on the face - I loved this striped one:

but it sat a little weirdly for me - so avoid final sale if you don't want to get stuck with a possibly odd-resting hat!

there is some ...um...BIG jewelry out lately. I love a statement necklace as much as the next girl but it is ridiculous how BIG some of the new necklaces are on tiny little me. pretty sure some of them could double as a weighty weapon. Arrowhead necklace, i'm looking at you.

I saw JCrew matchsticks. not matchstick jeans, mind you....matchsticks that you light candles with. not really what I had in mind when they said they were interested in expanding to Home items. hmm.

Not in love with the new arrival shoes.

40 of 2011 highlight: JCrew Factory striped scarf

I love scarves. and striped things. This voile-texture rayon scarf from JCrew factory is perfect for summer. The graphite rugby color is a little gentler than prison-black-and-white-stripes or strong nautical navy and white. Love.

Can't wait to pair this with white denim, a cute colorful tank and flip flops!

i don't see this on the site anymore, but if it pops back I definitely recommend it if you're in the market for a stripey summer scarf. It is an infinity scarf (looped) so it stays nice and neat, but you could always split the seam and make it a normal scarf if you prefer.

Some in store thoughts:

Sparkle mesh collar - the stones are still too blingy for me, but the design is cute. JCrew, please mini-size this!!

Mini mesh necklace - cute, but totally overpriced right now. This chain is VERY lightweight - so much so I think it could easily break, but the size is cute for petite ladies for sure.

Mini mesh supernova bracelet - I thought I would love this (still kicking myself for getting rid of my full size supernova bracelet), but somehow the mesh part stuck out too much for my liking - felt like I was seeing a lot of the "supporting hardware" unnecessarily.

Faux deco bracelet (aka Chain and Crystal Cuff). I like this in theory (the chain backing) but the large stones just didn't jive with me.

Pearl supernova bracelet - again, cute in theory but didn't like all the chains peeking out. I think I'm more of a cuff girl.

Mesh necklace - too long for me but I appreciate this boho look will work for others.

Hazel bracelet - cute square motif, bad execution. The giant stones are so not me. and they look like they are this close to falling off.

The one I got?

The mini mesh supernova in the antiqued silver. It's darker IRL than online, so looks a little less aluminum foil F21 cheapy and a little more vintage. It reminds me a lot of a piece I got from shopbop (Rachel Leigh) in the worn silver finish and tiny stones.

and the sales associate gave me a peek at the Spring 2011 upcoming releases -some cute beaded necklaces at lower price points, but I definitely like the mini mesh supernova best.

new arrival on promo, adore. I don't have a lot of gold/bronze in my life and this fits the bill. Especially after selling my toffee/dusty rose necklace on JCA a while back. Love the "smaller scale statement necklace" and the toffee stones. I actually ordered the crystal too to compare and it was too blingey -- the dark stones make this a little less faux diamond a little more vintage deco.

love. this is back up to full price but I'm sure it'll go back down soon. I've already worn it out, yippee!

Stay strong: 40 for 2011 highlight: Electra Vest

In an attempt to keep to that 40 for 2011 list, I'm featuring my recent loves and acquisitions instead of coveted items that I don't have.

enter: the Electra vest.

adore it. warm, fluffy, perfect throw on layer under a sweater coat or over a LS tee. saw it in store in a Medium (I'm normally a XXS/XS), tried it on, almost took it home then for $500 - 15% student discount. That was AGES ago, around September.

I Waited. and Waited. and Waited. and then, BAM!, additional 40% off sale with mark down to $349. Thank you, my 2 benjamins that I traded for this beauty. I got it in a small because I love the slouchy-boho-dramatic-hugeness of the warm shearling.

JCrew Spring Arrivals IRL part II

new arrivals IRL, continued! (sidenote, blogger, i kinda hATE how you lost this post and I had to type it all over again!!! argh!)

Rainy Day Utility Jacket - love the sherpa lining. I'm wearing a Sz 0. Seems really well made. I just got a couple utility military ish jackets so I'm set, but if you're in colder climates this could be a great spring/fall piece.

Ripple Stripe Pencil Skirt - I took a sz2 in this to get some more length, but I felt it was still a tad short. I see this as good to wear for brunch with the bf's parents type of thing, and is 21" too much to ask?? Loved the texture and seaming on this though. Maybe a sale purchase and then alterations to let out the hem...

Leatherette Lace Up Ballet Flats - super cute. The ribbon gets rid of the toe cleavage issue. Just the coloring and delicate ribbon make me think - it had better be darned CLEAN wherever I'm wearing these! I loved this color more than the black though because of the contrasting ribbon. Maybe I could swap out the ribbon though on the black, hmmm.....! Fit was TTS to a little small, I took a 7 in these and usually wear 6.5-7 in heels and 6.5-7 in flats.

Oxford ballet flats - oh, this is why jcrew is jcrew. Love it. A little toe cleavage but it's so darned cute. I took a 7 in these as well. I am stalking these till they go on sale!

Some reviews from trying these on IRL - I tweeted these pics a while back but finally here are my impressions (ack, February already????!)

Candy plaid perfect shirt - loved this!! Not-your-old-plaid-from-the-80s for sure. Nice fitted form, thin voile material. Gawked at the $72 price tag. Will wait. I have a pic of this on me IRL coming in the next post.

Tuxedo camp shirt (I don't see this on the website yet)- meh. Nothing to write home about, and I don't want to go overboard on the military.

Blue-white check shirt (an in-store only color, or sold out?)- cute, but I would prefer the lilac/dusty rose shade to girl it up a tad.

Double breasted Bonnie blazer - the upper pocket was really awkwardly placed. The buttons with crest motif - I appreciate, but they seemed cheap and plastickey. I'll stick with my Marled Thandie for double breasted.

Herringbone schoolboy blazer in driftwood, Sz 0. (Gee the lighting is horrible in the dressing room, mmm?) I wanted to love this, I really did. It looked so cute on the mannequin. I just could NOT keep it on, I felt like I was being stuck by pins all along the arms and seams. I have skinny arms and love skinny armed blazers but the pain was unbearable. Maybe I'll try it on again and see, but I was very disappointed that the metallic thread or whatever blend of content ruined it for me. :(

Floral tulle mini - too much going on for me, but on the right petite lady this would be super cute with a long cardi and sandals.

Scallop lace shell - cute layered, but I have too many tops like this! There were some fun colorways around though.

Forever cotton cardigan - loved all the sorbet colors of this! i bought a ton of these last year - they are delicate, but I love the tissue thin layering.

Also saw the striped button back tee, very cute but I'm sized out on this one.

Introducing: The 40 items for 2011.

I'm trying a new approach to closet editing. I made a long list of all my clothing/accessory/shoes/household decor purchases for 2010. (Round up and interesting statistics forthcoming). Given said laundry list, I'm thinking a B-I-N-G-O inspired list for what I'll allow myself to purchase in 2011 might be the ticket to more savings.

There are some "wild card" slots to allow for retailers to surprise me with a must have, but for the most part this list holds everything I've been searching for in terms of classic items that are MIA from the closet, or things I know I love to collect (ahem, jewelry) and would pain me to stop cold turkey. (As much as I might benefit from a total ban of JCrew orders for 12 months, you and I know that will not happen overnight...I'm hoping this is a reasonable first step).

If it's on the list, yay - OK to purchase if I deliberate and decide it's THE ONE. No need to get all these 40 items this year (it started as 21 but with the (ack! 28 items I bought from the 40% off JCrew sale I've um, expanded, to keep it realistic)-- I've been searching for some for like, a decade! If not on the list, I can add it - for five special wild card cases, but that's it. I need to curb my vicious return cycle. Here goes:

1. Dressy nude peep toe heels. Non skanky, non flashy, classic, but not matronly. Still searching. Have been for a whiiiiiiile.

gift certificate spending led to other non-giftcard spending. planning on returning what doesn't make my heart go pitter patter, but i just may have drunk a little too much crewlade this morning

with the gloomy weather I was longing for this old June 09 catalog....

...with a little military chic, after scoring a DOUBLE SERGE BRONZED OCHRE PENCIL this week with the 40% additional off in store.

Subsequently:

Boys' military jacket (similar here for dads/hubbies/bf's) in dark straw. Factory Twill Bomber in Fatigue (looks like the buttons are more of a dark gunmetaley-brass, and it's less poufy/rumpled, here's hoping). Cashmere henley in bronzed olive. I'm rediscovering brown shades.

...and reading blogposts about yellow coats at TrueCrewLove made me jump on another yellow belt (similar here), and a couple well-priced basics: the forever cardi in XXS (returnable), the Factory striped scarf (so gauzey and spring like...spring weather come nownownow please), the Academy Pant in Tweed (still not an owner of tweed pants, how can that be), and the silk streamers henley in blackberry (which will go marvelously with the double serge ochre skirt!)

and some girly pretties to round it out: Sosie collection tank (I mean how can you say no to this shimmery beauty down from $495), the dazzling dots pencil (loved it on michelle obama), and both colors (decisions, decisions) of a new necklace I saw in store but with the SAs ignoring me I left the locked jewelry case empty handed...the Crystal Rail Link necklace. A little more hardware-intensive than other crystal collars, with some smaller stones for a bit more subtle of a statement.

Year in Review 2010: JCrew Memory Lane

2010 flew by. So much so that I'm not 100% certain where all my JCrew catalog covers are (did I really just recycle some of them?!)

Here is in the tradition started last year, my walk down memory lane for JCrew and noteworthy JCrew competitors of 2010! I will follow up with a more statistics-ey approach (of # of orders/store visits, # of items kept, # returned etc) soon. Vewwwwwy vewy interesting trends.

JANUARY: The "Is she really wearing embellished shorts + a suit jacket" one. I don't think I kept it. which is REEAALLLY unusual for me, the catalog hoarder. My notable JCrew purchases this month were popbacks: Fall 2009 lovelies like the stardust pencil skirt in gunmetal and the scattered petals tank.

JCrew.com started selling limited items from Madewell, and I bit on the Jigsaw necklace in gunmetal - Love! But after a tee-shirt-casualty (accidentally thrown in the washer), and being tired of $88 silk camis-that-will-get-marked-down-to-$29.99-later, I took somewhat of a break with the Crew (at least compared to Jan 2009).

Funds were spent instead on a couple anthro pieces (snowscape tank, Lasata jacket), some precious-metal jewelry, and my first pair of Loubs (snagged with some Dior stiletto clogs for under $150 each).

FEBRUARY: The Portugal one. This was probably, in retrospect, one of my favorites this year. I loved the on-location pics, the pops of new colors. I still kinda dream about the Unagi pencil skirt (but then console myself that it probably would have snagged the first time I wore it). I think it may have been from the Jan catalog, but February is when I purchased the Zebra blakely dress at full price - actually, I got the belt too, I loved the styling so much. Picked up the Cocodrillo shorts on popback, and a couple crewcuts items.

I started really returning what I didn't love, including unmemorable blah-fit dresses, cardis, and non-versatile shiny things. As much as I loved the Portugal catalog location, my biggest hurrah came from snagging the PIAZZA sweater jacket NWT on eBay in a XS Navy!

MARCH: The "real women" one. I appreciate the effort. Sadly, the clothes were still not that inspiring. I ordered a couple more featherweight cotton cardis, and the Ames Watercolor Potpurri Dress, but in general was kinda bored. Liberty of London for Target was a distraction. Local consignment boutique with awesome flapper feather headbands and vintage purses also a distraction. Patience did pay off with RueLaLa, and I snagged the Pour la Victoire Agathe boots I had been coveting for a gazillion months.

APRIL: The "gaping mouth" one. Unhealthy looking model with weirdly layered clothing, too many ruffles and tattered tees. This is also when the crew announced Fall 2010 would be the season of "Edie Beale goes to band camp", and models with messy, twig-ridden hair walked the runway. I bought another featherweight cardi, and the glacon necklace that came out in January. Found a timeless Derek Lam dress at Loehmanns, got caught up in Zac Posen for Target (and subsequently returned everything but the ruched skirt and bikini/sarong).

MAY: The pretty ocean one. I also can't find this catalog in person, but May was when I ordered the recently-launched Fenton-Fallon collabo - loved the Carrington Collar Necklace. Also finally got the buffalo check scarf in lilac on popback, and the supernova necklace in gunmetal. New releases: the Victoria Cotton Cami (liked this, got in 3 colors). Was brutal about returns though - the Jaspe sequin sweatshirt was too slouchy on me, the plume string bikini too UN-padded, the sea urchin bib necklace too plasticey, and the ames potpurri mini not as nice as the dress.

JUNE: The boat and unremarkable coverup one. (No offense to anyone who loves the item on the cover, it would just look awful on petite little me). Number of orders hits an all time low: 1. oh WAIT, no - in July there were zero orders. The highlights for June were: essie nail polish (kinda sad, hmmmm?), another featherweight cardi (do you see a pattern?), a snakeskin belt, and the brass double chain cuff. I was a bit more excited about the Anthro Climbing Cowlnecks to be honest - flattering, unique, pretty. Even Forever21 came out this month with a cute cream lace skirt, but my old Crew did not seem inspired.

JULY: The unremarkable one. I don't even remember this. I splurged on a vintage blancpain white gold watch on GILT, and a La Mer orange wrap watch a la Hermes, some Vera Wang beach towels and electronics. NO ORDERS. ZIP, NADA, ZILCH.

AUGUST: The "I wear sequins with my military chic" one. More mini minis and shiny things and ruffles. Tattered tees. Waiting for fall.

SEPTEMBER: The return of Mona. Finally, a cover and some MadMen-meets-Sequinned-Madewell styling I can get on board with. Also featured in the catalog is a section for The Romantics with Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel and the gang outfitted in head-to-toe crew. I immediately bought the Mongolian Lamb Stole, perfect stripe boatneck tee (x2), and snagged the Crystal Milano necklace on popback, plus took advantage of the JCA coupon (woot woot!) to get a little Bobbi Brown. This catalog was a great example of how the location doesn't need to be exotic - with the right styling and the lovely Mona/Katie Holmes/etc JCrew can bring on fall with their fabulous color palettes.

September was a banner month for the crew (as usual I guess), with the onset of Online Factory I snapped up the Tiered Lace Cami and Lace Pencil Skirt. Meanwhile ASOS orders were pretty awesome (Ligia Dias lace chain necklace - very Lanvin- and a striped shredded jersey scarf that was a dead ringer for Armani).

OCTOBER: The artsy sea cliffs one. Love the aesthetic of the cover. In store I made like a bandit on the Mickey card, after a super nice SA knew the value of price-matching store discounts + prices with online inventory. Sequin pencil skirt, rosewood, palmilla lace pencil, lots of olive, cashmere, and the fantastic stacked sweater + Mickey card promo = the most I spent all year. (ish).

Surprisingly, Talbots got into the crew-audience arena, with new styling and cuts. I got my paws on the coveted Leather Pencil Skirt in the Luggage and Black finally, but the rest of Talbots for me is still "meh" - I think it's the unique COLORS that keep bringing me back to the crew.

October was hard on the wallet, with another long-coveted item, the Miu Miu Naplak Spectator Heels in Nudo, coming to my doorstep via eBay. I'd only been searching for YEARS, you know. Also picked up a goorrrrrgeous pair of D&G spectators and Leonello Borghi luggage. If the economy doesn't go up, I don't know what else I can do.

NOVEMBER: The heels in air one. Also love the look of this cover. I grabbed the merino glovettes newly released and soldout, in olive. Returned a bunch of factory items that didn't like up to quality standards. Found the masquerade tee on popback. Invested in Dolce Vita Bronson OTK flatboots in black (adore), and Jeffrey Campbell city boots (OMG SOOOO amazing - like three boots in one!) in nude.

DECEMBER: The cute tree dragging one &The olivey text one. hmmmmmmm, Acrylic sweaters. Price dropping soon after releases. I loved the knit bow ballet slippers, and the sequin sweatshirt in heather dove.

Snapped up the tulipe cami for $19.99 (see, I told you), sequin strip tank for $7.99 (wahoo!), the Professor Blazer on the outlet (love, big time), and the Novo stripe silk top (damn I hate final sale - needs alterations to shrink it to a real sz0).

You'd better believe I picked up the Collection Fleur Mirror Heels on popback too! Cascading pansy tank went in the washer and DIED. returned a few things beore the onset of final sale (phew), and discovered Madewell. I LOOOOVE my madewell blazers! perfect, perfect, perfect. Have been searching high and low for something like the Borrowed from the Boys blazer and the Midnight Blazer.

With the holiday shopping and events and gifts, I picked up a Rachel Leigh vintage inspired necklace on shopbop, some home decor items, perfume, and um, a lot of Lanvin for H&M.

The mantra now is that Materials Matter, and I need to Move towards Minimalism.

With the heavy Fall season done and over, gift cards spent as of today, I am committed to doing that. :)

Happy holidays and new year's resolutions

Hey there to anyone still around! Sorry I've been MIA for the past month - it's been crazy busy at work and school and I'm actually still traveling abroad, but wanted to wish everyone a happy new year!

Tis the time for new years resolutions so.......

My 2011 non-work resolutions are:

1. More closet editing. I have a whole stack of boxes of shoes I've never worn that I need to put on eBay, but am slowly selling them off a couple pairs a week on JCA. I'm vowing that the Belle fleur mirror heels I snagged on pop back for $100 will be the last of my shoe purchases for a while. I am officially out of shoe storage space.

2. Replacing rock with glam (I think). Mid-twenties crisis, much? I'm cognizant suddenly of the limited time and place for rocker chic ...and I think I'm ok with it. Yes, my home decor tastes are already leaning a little less bachelorette pad, a little more classic Hollywood regency. Less Paramore Misery Business, more bossa nova and jazz. Glam is the new rock? Bye-bye leather cuffs and fenton fallon, hello leather trays with shiny orbs on a bar cart and feathery winter stoles? Not a bad trade IMHO. But I might keep the Fenton Fallon :)

3. Keep documenting all my purchases here. In an attempt to scare myself into becoming more minimalist. I've been busy so not shopping that much but have placed a couple orders from jcrew and madewell .... Um, and shopbop, and anthro....so have a backlog of reviews to do. You guys keep me honest about it though. More round ups in the good ol tradition to come. Wonder if I spent more or less at the crew this year..... We shall see. I'm hoping it's waaaaaay less. After last year's shoe round up and the year b4 my wallet needs a rest!

4. More quality, less quantity. Sadly(?) I don't anticipate much time in the next few months for blogging about huge online orders, or pulling the trigger on said orders, but I will try to make the posts I do put up worth it! I'll be on twitter still but I'm hoping to focus less on the blog on "all this stuff I bought on final sale at jcrew" and more on "the handful of beauties I am eyeing but not buying everything". maybe a few more non-spendy things I'm loving, too. Well, at least I'm gonna try!!!!

Lanvin for eBay (H&M)

I am really loving the lanvin x H&M capsule collection. By a stroke of wardrobe luck, I nabbed the silk trench with detachable faux fur collar at the SF H&M last week, sans standing in line in the bitter cold.

Yes, $349 + our 10% sales tax is a little ridiculous. I would have NEVER bought this on eBay, but being in-store, I actually took it in to the dressing room just for kicks, maybe a blog review... and boy, was I surprised. I didn't want to take it off! The faux fur collar is amazing (would have bought that alone for a pretty penny - rivals the JCrew Mongolian fur tippet but with faux, yay) - the press photos do NOT do it justice. It's the same soft, stripey fur as the vest. The coat itself is a beautiful silk with a deep black/indigo subtle sheen, and the raw edges are reminiscent of actual lanvin. The material is just gorgeous.

That was the only piece my store had in after launch day, so I stalked eBay for the black patent cone heels (check) and leather/pearl/chain necklace (check). I cannot believe the crazy markup for the sunglasses, some of the jewelry, and the dresses. wow. nutso. I managed to luck out and get the heels and necklace for almost the same cost that it would have been for me to park in SF and get the items myself (hah, fat chance in this cold weather). perhaps while everyone was in thanksgiving dinner food coma, lol.

overall verdict - well done, Lanvin and H&M!

Destination Shopping: Boston

I recently took a little jaunt to Beantown, home of preppy chic. Knowing how JCrew is no longer really preppy chic (and having spent a good chunk of change at my local JCrew stores + online) I opted for the one shopping day excursion to visit a few other places...some overall impressions:

Bummer that dwtn crossing Filene's shut down - new location is way busy and small. "VAULT" nothing to write home about - dries van noten skirt still $400 or shoes missing a strap $350? no thanks. Left with a classic minimalist Jil Sander belt that I know I'll get tons of wear out of. They are doing 40% off Jil Sander with a handful of shoes left and random separates. Nothing really else of note in the store. at all.

Marshalls across Boylston: nicely organized, with Pour la Victoire boots. I'll come back again - not as harried as the Filene's crowd and maybe next time those lace peeptoes or something similar will be my size ;)

Meandered through Copley and Prudential Center, ne'er crossing paths with JCrew. Did swing by the (small, but flagship for Boston?) H&M after not visiting any H&M for like 2-3 years - while cheaply sewn seams that are everywhere in that store are not my cup of tea, found a cozy knit camel open wide collar sweater that fills a hole in my wardrobe. Also noted why I don't visit H&M much - ewwwww, crazy big dustballs in the dressing room. They need to meet DYSON, pronto.

And the highlight: Harvard square's new Anthro was gorrrrrrrrrrgeous (albeit a lot of stairs- 5 levels!). The SAs were attentive, the sale room (tiny!) was well organized and I always love anthro displays. A tip- if you're going there looking for sale scores, make sure to do a sweep around all sections - there was a rack of fresh cuts and all the sale jewelry was near the cash registers - could have been easily missed.

I left with the Rushcliffe Cardi (adore, so unique, and on sale for $79!) and the Pattern Ponder Cardi (um, hello $19.95 with no tax!). So glad I made the stop instead of calling it quits with the 35deg weather. Somehow even though I could probably (welll, maybe our SF anthro is a bit more picked over sale wise) get these back at home, now they are a little more special :)
Last stop was one of my fave stores of the city, Black Ink. Japanese home and office imports, fun gifts, toys, wahoo!

I zipped up an order for JCrew's ahem, weekend shopping, with the majority of purchases being from Factory. I was happy with the Tiered Lace Cami and silver Lace Pencil from my first factory order, so here's to hoping these are nice IRL too! Reviews when I get them back here!

Spectator Hat in Soft Sandalwood. Reminiscent of JCrew 2007, no? I don't recall this design in JCrew retail, but I love it!

Grand total under $300. I know, I know, I've been majorly dropping dough with the crew lately (still overdue on the red card total haul post). The Tori and Prof Blazer were the culprits.

I have or have seen the retail versions of the glittens, tori, and pointelle cardi so I'll do a comparison when I receive the items!

JCrew Fall Picks Part 1

My picks from JCrew. It was a good weekend for both of us :). Just click on any of the shopstyle images to link directly to the jcrew sale pages.

1. The Thandie blazer. I saw this on a manni in NYC and loooved it, and waiting for the cool weather here to kick in has paid off -- it's on sale (secret promo? not in the sale section at all in my stores), for $99 or (even better) $103 (regular) or $89 (marled) online! I got it in the dark charcoal marled and have already worn this puppy!

2. Dark Rosewood-ey things.
One of the best deals right now is this jCrew Sequin Pencil Skirt, in brown sheen, for $49.99 in stores. With a price match from the red phone (yay awesome CS who did this without me even asking!) this is en route to me in my size without the shop-worness of the in-stores ones.

I already own the gunmetal sequin pencil (looove) from last year, and wasn't sure about this but it looked awesome with the Dark Rosewood Calista Cami ($29.99 in stores) that fortuitously was sitting in my store in a size0.

The Dark Rosewood color is really quite lovely - I also got a jackie in this shade.

3. Soft winterey henleys.

My 30% sweater indulgence included the Cashmere Henley, which I already own in snow. I picked it up in rose dust and heather agate. Stunning colors!

Don't feel the JCrew cashmere love? This one is a dead ringer for the style, and on sale! I absolutely love this look with a victoria cami or other tank underneath.

4. Shades of olive. Still going strong on the olive green for fall. Picked up the Bateau in olive stripe, a glimmer sash, and a $14.99 Bettina in tuscan olive. So flattering and neutral!

I'll do a full "JCrew Haul" collage soon, just wanted to share a few of these highlights in case (like me) some of you procrastinated the use of the red card till the last days :)! There are still some gems to be found in store!

Newbie(?) CS rep: Hi, is this (my name)?

Me (on my cell phone): yes, this is (my name)...

Newbie CS: I'm calling from JCrew to inform you that the [coveted popback] and [extra final sale gamble] you ordered are no longer available. (Sounds oddly proud at saying the full item names)

Me: oh, okay

Her: Is there anything else I can do for you?

Me: (thinking: eh?) ...um, no, thank you

Her: Thank you for your time.

Me: mmhmm, OK- bye.

Well, pfft. You just went a notch down in my customer service files, JCrew.

Why would you call and interrupt my day... (even so, I wasn't mean-sounding, just surprised at the call and nonchalant tone of the CS rep)....just to tell me you're out of 1/3 of the items I ordered? Frankly, I'm used to it, and I'd rather have the unobtrusive email rather than a call. ESPECIALLY when the rep didn't even bat an eye or sound apologetic in the least. Is this what CYA looks like in this economy? It's just sloppy and a waste of time/money.

I used to order multiple times a week (sometimes double orders in one day), and now, the first time I've ordered anything in a month (and two months before that for the last-last order), this is what happened to the JCrew service I used to rave about? Seriously, if you're going to hire people to do this questionably-necessary, covering ya' arse job, train them to at least say we apologize for the inconvenience?

Has anyone else received a weird, unapologetic "personal call" from the crew? Am I the only one who thinks this is a downgrade from the good ol' cancellation email? (I'd rather they spend the money on hiring new designers/fit models/obtaining quality fabrics....)!

I'm liking this fall-ey outfit on Leighton Meester. After living in cargo pants the past couple of weekends, I decided to try the whole skinny cargo look, and to my surprise, I liked it! Rather than paying $200+ for the J Brand ones that have made many a fashion blog (shown below), I am loving my pair from (whodathunk) MaxStudio. Worn rolled up with little military/camp shirt type tabs, I paired them with the jCrew Collection sequin slouchy tank, a featherweight cardi, zara studded belt, and wood heel black peep toes.

I'm going soon just for 3 days and so much changes in the city I'm sure there's something I don't know about...

Vintage accessories shopping in Chelsea/SoHo
Artsy photog journey thru Central Park or the Guggenheim
Century 21 scrounging or sample sales (or will it pale in comparison to GILT etc? I cannot express how disappointed I am in Jeremy's now that they swapped out JCrew samples/overstock in favor of Urban Outfitters and Anthro rejects...wonder if C21 is still any good.)
Madewell or Topshop (haven't been to the ones in NYC and none for us in SF)?
Barney's warehouse sale? hmmmm...

ok, those are mostly shopping oriented...any suggestions that don't involve me being tempted to spend a huge chunk of change?

Fenton Fallon for JCrew: Carrington Collar Necklace

wow, only 3 posts last month - it's been crazy busy! I'm still here, albeit with short posts. today's feature is a little out there, but for those on the fence I thought a review would be useful!

The Fenton Fallon for JCrew collection was questionable in my book, but with the BIRTHDAY code last month (sorry, waaaaay backlogged, I've been gravitating to twitter for quickness, follow me there!) on JCA I decided to try this necklace out.

Verdict: I kinda lovelovelove it! When the whole brass mixed chains thing goes out of style, I'm definitely using the fringe piece on its own. It just will take a quick swapping of some jump rings to make this a two-fer. Gorgeous. and kiiinda makes up justabit for the $98 costume jewelry price tag (with the 15% code). At the least it's brass and i'm not super worried about lead contaminants (perhaps wrongly so, but well, it's for incidental use).

It's a little heavy, but we all knew it wasn't exactly every day wear, right? (for me at least!!) I wore it out to sushi the other night and didn't elicit a "What the heck are you wearing?" from the BF, so i consider my foray into rock chic with a plain white tank and black blazer + skinny jeans a success, LOL.

Springey summery lace, ahhh.

I'm super excited to whip out my JCrew and F21 eyelet and lace skirts!

First off, the black lace skirt that I adore (blogged about here) now comes in a summery, shorter, cream colored version! You'd better believe I ordered that in 2 sizes right away. I haven't placed an order for F21 for over 2 months, and this finally caused me to pull the trigger!

I also ordered this rayon/chiffon lace overlay dress which is very reminiscent of the Rodarte for Target sheath, but lighter hued. I'm thinking it'll be nice and easy travel piece under a JCrew featherweight long cardi and a belt.

Speaking of dresses, summer always channels white eyelet and lace for me, and this Lilly Pulitzer dress is soooo classic and pretty. Love the lace dangling at the hem for an updated look.

and lace has made its way into accessories as well...love this purpley scarf to punch up the neutral palette:

I've been MIA and on a shopping ban (which I totally broke this week, will post about some of those later...) the falling off the wagon included these L.A.M.B. platforms. So it's only appropriate that I publish the shoe and bag roundup as well.

13. Harajuku lovers Rope sandal. This might be a true sample as I don't recall seeing it with Harajuku's other rope sandals in the past. It is so unique with the cute green ankle strap and printed sole.
14. BCBG Doriel black peeptoes. A great inspired by shoe- I'd been unsuccesfully searching for my size in the long sold out miu miu whipstitch pumps. Happened upon these and they fit perfectly and are pretty comfy for their height!

Bags #2 and #3: the Topshop mint suede clutch (it's really just a wallet...teeny tiny), and Topshop purpley-grey Chanel-esque cross body. (which is cute, but I wish didn't have leopard lining!!)

My ground rules for the last months (I wrote a draft of this 2 months ago) were:

1) Absolutely NO boots. I am actually aiming for my Pour La Victoires to be my only boot purchase this year. 2009 was boot-crazy. and I really don't *need* any Ann Demeulemeester $1000 boots on eBay, mmmmkay.
2) Nothing over 4.5" (Including any platforms). No ifs-and-or-buts. I was actually honest to god contemplating a pair of Ruthie Davis stilettos that were 5". WHA. I love the aesthetics, but for pete's sake, I have to WALK sometimes, yknow.
3) A max of one order from online that I can't return scot-free. It's a pain, and you really need to try shoes on.
4) Two pairs of shoes, max. This basically means avoiding shopping until June. I'm committed to trying!

Verdict: only a couple more weeks till June, and I am on track. I bought (#15.) a pair of Cynthia Vincent for Target neon tribal wedges (unlike anything I own) and (#16) the L.A.M.B. Veena platforms I have been drooling over since I laid eyes on them on Justine's blog. These purchases follow all 4 rules. I know 16 pairs of shoes purchased for the first half of the year is still a little ridiculous, but given the previous roundups, if I can keep that # lowlowlow for the rest of the year I will be happy. small steps.

Zac Posen for Target (early)

zac posen for target has landed, ladies! i hemmed and hawed in the dressing room for a while, and ended up with some fun pieces. here are some reviews+ IRL pics!

1. Tuxedo style blazer with navy ruffle and black pleating detail. I thought this was going home with me, but at the end of the day, the XS was a little tight in the ribcage, the S a little boxy, and the satin texture of the sleeves was a little too shiny-cheap. (The sleeves and body are different material). A case of sub-par materials, overall though, alas. I love the scarf around the neck, and bought the scarf but it is way big so I don't know where the rest of it went in the photo!

2. Safety pin dress - I think this is one of the nicest pieces of the line. It was $69.99. lined, very pretty print, beautifully cut. It runs small - I got this in a small.

3. Dress - didn't appeal to me. It's a little greener IRL.

4. Pink dress - didn't see this, am a little curious, but it seems pretty short.

5. Leather/suede jacket - the quality was decent, but I didn't try this on since the color was just too much for me. 6. Tuxedo bodysuit - a little tooooo playboy bunny for me.

7. I was back and forth about this. It comes with a belt. The closures are adorable, but in the end I thought I wouldn't wear it that much (I have another yellow JCrew trench) and it was a bit big in the body. The fabric is a shiny polyester with a little weight, and could be really cute on the right person.

8. I thought I would take this home, but IRL the snaps are very shiny and I just wasn't in love with the execution.

9. Didn't see this top, but I surprisingly LOVED the skirt. In the pic it looks very F21, but it's really cute on. I sized way up in this (a Medium) so it reaches my knees and was not too body-hugging. A drapey rayoney-poly blend with a zipper down the front.

10. This suit is cute and well made, but the V was just ridiculously low on me.

11. White shirt - ugh. super cheap fabric. Weird pleated sleeves.
12. The safety pin dress, back view. Love!
13. Magenta ruffle dress - didn't appeal to me
14. The tuxedo blazer
15. The swimsuits
16. The greenish chambray dress
17. A cardigan - has some sparkle which made it look cheapish
18. Pink snap skirt - IRL the fabric is lacking
19. Floral skirt - could be cute, but was too shiny and frilly for me
20. The red leather/suede jacket ($199...whoah)
21. String bikini -- LOVE. I went through the whole stack to find a pattern swatch i liked, but it is awesome. They were $17.99/piece
22. Sweater dress - cheap quality, le sigh.

PSA: My coworker alerted me to Urban Decay up to 75% off today at Hautelook (I unsubscribed from the announcements...only to see a few reminders via twitter...)...and I immediately snapped up some basics.

If you're curious about the line and "what it can do for you" I recommend reading the reviews (most are glowing) for the mineral loose powder foundation -- I picked up a couple for $7.50 (reg $30 a pop). aaaaand one of the lipglosses and a replacement kabuki style brush.

The nail colors look fun but I still have my essie from jCrew that I have yet to try. The eyeshadow loose pigment is oh-so-cute to have on the vanity tray, too, hmmm?

Shiny pretty things. In an effort to budget down, I'm taking stock of the first quarter of 2010.

1) Vintage 1920s Diamond and Silver Filigree Pendant. I cannot believe I found this for $60. That's um, a fraction of what JCrew's costume jewelry retails for.

2) Garrard Playing Card Necklace (from GILT), $35. Love it. Wear it often.

3) Key necklace. Tiffany-esque. Haven't busted this out yet.

4) JCrew Vintage Flower Pendant. $13. En route!

5) Eves Addiction Solitaire Lariat. Simple, Chic, Realistically Sized.

6) F21 chain ring. Cheap bling as a pendant.

7) JCrew Gunmetal Pyramid Bangle. Wanted at full price, snagged for $12.

8) Bubble necklace. Adore. Couldn't afford the multi-thousand dollar Tiffany's.

9) F21 Chain bangles. meh. need to limit the final sale F21 jewelry. <-- so far, successfully thwarted potential orders.

10) JCrew Crystal Supernova in Gunmetal. Bought at full price, returned, waited for saaaaaaale $68. Love this.

11) F21 love rings as pendants. Cute, cheap, french. yep.

12) Madewell Jigsaw Necklace. I adore this. Gunmetal is my friend.

So, that averages to 12 pieces in 3 months. Um, basically one a week?!

With that in mind, I'm allowing myself until June 2010:

1) A JCrew necklace I've been eyeing, if it drops below $25 shipped. The full price and even 1st markdown JCrew Martha necklace and bracelet are off limits, le sigh. (I'll survive).
2) Vintage fine jewelry - 2 pieces or $200. Vintageing is hit or miss, so will aim for none, but this is my "out" if I see something amazing.
3) ONE F21 or other cheapo item, no matter how cute and trendy the designers get. Ideally I would purchase nothing from F21, but this is my freebie cheat.
4) One souvenir jewelry item if I take a trip

I think these VERY SPECIFIC rules will be better than a general ban for me.
So from 12 pieces in 3 months to 0-5 pieces for the next 3 months. Here it goes! (Stay tuned for VERY SPECIFIC shoe budgeting and clothes budgeting posts).

IRL: Long overdue Gaultier for Target Review

The Jean Paul Gaultier for Target line did not appeal to me online AT ALL. But I ended up with two pieces IRL, when looking for liberty of london.

1st, the dragon/wave bikini:

I love this half-tattoo-esque, half vintage Japanese painting print. The waistband is tucked in, and that's how I plan to wear it, or with some white board shorts. From the McQueen for Target, F21 bikini spree, LoL for Target etc. it seems that this is one type of item that diffusion lines can do well -- pick a pretty print, get the nice poly lined material, and you have yourself a winner.

2nd, this gingham check bustier/ shrug:

My first checkered shirt! The material is soft and flowy, the shirt actually looks like a shirt if I wear my hair down to cover the front straps, and I love that I can detach the shrug (well, it's kinda too tight to be useful over a white tank) from the bustier/tank (now *this* is begging for a white cardi and jeans for 4th of july)!

The top is padded, so it's not for everyone, but I think it's fab that I don't have to wear a regular or strapless bra with this.

It is currently too darn cold to wear any of this, but I'm hopeful for summer.

Watercolor prints for spring: DSW shoe find

I don't consider myself an uber-flowery person (despite the fact that I cherish four *yet, count 'em, four* of JCrew's items in the Abstract Rose Kandinsky print and the rose chiffon tee, a collection of corsage tees and various floral sash-like belts). I tend to use my floral pieces with caution, at least Mon-Fri. I bought a couple floral pins circa JCrew fall 08 and haven't worked them in to my day to day yet (maybe this spring).

I like the versatility of this watercolorey-floraley shoe, though, and it just may make it into my work wardrobe on a Friday with some dark straight jeans. (or at least I could do a quick swap at work to put these babies on). IRL:

Santana "Pleasure in Turquoise"

(in my head the name is something a bit more refined like "Watercolor Ciel Peeptoes" LOL)

I can see this with a pencil skirt/ tank/cardi/skinny belt just as well as with my dark straight jeans/white top/blazer uniform. It may even give me reason to buy one of JCrew's orange belts.

Love the patent leather heel and stripe down the back. This is one where I was picky about the print -- it reads mostly off-white with blue and a smattering of the tan/orange earth colors to keep it from looking too girly. The pictures online vary - some prints show a lot more brown than cream.

I bought these at DSW in the city for $70 (retail is $100) but they are floating around online for anywhere from $50 for various colors (here) to $100 for the new prints.

Overall it's a pretty comfy shoe because of the platform. It reads as more modern than, say, a watercolor floral blouse or scarf IMO, because of the architectural toe cross part:

and the fairly thick patent platform base.

How gorgeous would this style be (maybe less platform) with some of the JCrew prints (watercolor potpurri and that pale aqua/white liberty print from 2008, anyone?)

Overall, I'd give good ol guitar whiz Carlos an A for concept and execution on this one. Worth the DSW starting price to me, though I'm sure you can find this on sale later in the season. I'm itching for it to be warm so I can wear these ASAP!

well. I'm pretty sure this proves a pattern of insomnia is *caused* by JCrew's extra30%+free shipping sales.

I've been away from the crewlade for 3-4 weeks, and BAM! two orders in 2 days. I'm really a determined JCrew stalker... (the first stage to overcoming a problem is acknowledgement?)...and the crewcuts sweater I missed out on popped back up. I was in a sleepy state and didn't feel like browsing the quickly dwindling women's section at 4am this morning, but <60 items in crewcuts is OK for sleepyheads.

Boys' Seersucker Critter Belt - Navy/Green Whale. freaking adorable! $7! happy dance.

The long-stalked-after Girls' Double Breasted Sailing Sweater $35. Comfy cotton, a great basic. I tried this on in-store and never saw it again...until the miracle of popback-ness occurred last night.

Boys' seersucker blazer $28. I tried this year's version and was in love, but couldn't stomach $150ish for a kid's cotton jacket. Hopefully this works out! They didn't have a XL so I wonder if I can even fit in it unbuttoned, with a tank underneath!

Boys' crown tie, $11. I'm utterly addicted to crowns, crests, lions, and the like.

These all seem like classic JCrew pieces (no ruffles, unfinished edges, weird embellishments), so I'm hopeful these bleary eyed conquests will arrive and be ready to roll!

JCrew April Catalog/Spring Picks

I love flowers, and liked the new April catalog. Maybe it takes a bit more time for me to figure out how to integrate pieces into my wardrobe, but in choosing the "April catalog picks", I found myself gravitating towards a couple items that stood the test of (relatively brief) time -- that is, they were released last roll out. Given my bursting closet, I'm being a little more choosy on the spring pick-me-ups. So here's my curated want list/recent purchase list:

From Jenna's Picks: hmm, I'll take my classic Frankie bag in guava even though I really really like the studded satchel shown. I may have to pick up that fedora, but I do have a TON of summer hats already. The other stuff is a pass for me, as I'm more of a solids-not-floral girl.

New cutwave dress! Drool. I'm iffy about that huge necklace, but I like that the model looks happy and the baglady look is toned down with the light colors.

This was one of my favorite looks in the catalog...minus the huge necklace again. Love the happy neon and print detail, color pairing, bag with flowers! This is why I keep coming back to the crew.

I'm a fan of linen for summer. I like the big flower in the shoot : ). With a less muddy colored inner layer, this is perfect!

OK, I know this is pinned to oblivion, but I like the look. Cute striped classic with a twist, and light khaki cuffed shorts.

I'm itching for travel! The guides are super small, about 2 x 5 inches. They kinda need to be accompanied with an iPhone/GPS/online connectivity because they are just lists. No maps, no directions. Sort of like if your friend gave you tips and you jotted it down on a cute post-it. It is kind of annoying that 1.5 pages of the 20-ish pages are used for the "book jacket" self-praise. I have yet to try the online updated version.

Spring Coats Arsenal

I am a coat fanatic. Trying to refrain from spring trenches that are not flattering on me as-is (ahem, ahem, Anthro Two Paths Trench) and trenches that are exorbitantly priced (ahem, ahem, Leifsdottir Ringmaster Trench). Because I do love the ones I own.

Set 1: the fun ones!

(1) THE CHEERY TRENCH: JCrew Cherbourg Linen Ottoman Coat (looooove). Has the best polkadot lining! I don't know if this really coats as a trench? but it serves the same purpose as the Leifsdottir coat.

(2) THE RUFFLEY LONDON TRENCH: twenty8twelve Clyde ruffle trench. Got this on GILT at the end of season, itching to break it out!

(3) THE PARK AVENUE TRENCH: Modcloth (Tov) Socialite Sophisticate Coat -- this one actually FITS me. It's snug and feminine. The pleated skirt actually works! (there's one left in a size small, nab it!)

(4) THE CLEAN MILITARY VINTAGE TRENCH: Via Spiga white drop waist double breasted (brass thin buttons) coat. (5) THE LIGHT TRENCH: Trusty old classic H&M single breasted beige trench, fitted in the arms with tortoise shell buttons. Light and springey.

(6) THE RAINY TRENCH: London Fog, removable lining, "real" trench for rain. In black.

(7) THE GIRLY RAIN TRENCH: not pictured - H&M ruffle black raincoat trench with polkadot lining. kyooote!

OK, I think the crisis has been averted. I have a lot of trench coats. Are you getting a new spring trench?

Pour La Victoire Agathe Boots

I have this photo saved from almost a full year ago when the Pour La Victoire Fall 09 line images were released online. I freaking ADORE the heel harness detail. Considered it at full price, but I have a slight. boot. purchasing. problem.

I got them this past week using a RueLaLa credit for 70ish% off. $110 shipped, baby. (OK, yes, I could have used the credit for something else, so really, $140 shipped, but still). You understand. I know you do.

Sorry I was late in posting this deal (those RueLaLa final sales are BRUTAL - sold out ridiculously fast). It's the only thing I bought even though I contemplated dresses, coats, etc. I was effectively good at plucking the one coveted item (I saw it on RLL regular sale but it had sold out). oh, pleasefitpleasefitpleasefit. I figure I have 2 other pairs of PLVs and sized up to a 7.5 in these (normally 6.5-7) so it should be OK. ack.

I'm going to love these forever. makes up for missing the ann demeulemeesters almost. and these are a teenytiny fraction of those cost-wise. ahh, pour la victoire.

Liberty of London Target haul

For not being a huge printsey person, I sure ordered a lot of Liberty of London. I went by a Target on Friday and found a whole lot of nooooothing liberty. (I did, verrry surprisingly, get 2 items from the Gaultier for Target line which I turned my nose up at a couple weeks ago, but that's another post).

7 things about moi, mostly bloggy/fashion related because as my header says, this is a place for non-work non-serious things!:

1) I used to be an apartmenttherapy.com addict. The home is basically in order, so that internet browsing addiction has molded into JCrew. we all have little addictions.

2) I'm a photography nut, but extremeeeeely lazy about OOTD and fashion posts. I gotta hand it to the lovely bloggers who can share their outfits multiple times a week with a tripod. I have a ton of pics I need to process, and only really get on it if I've gone on a big vacation and need to clear my memory cards! basically iPhone low quality snaps are all I can handle for the blog arena of my life, with a smattering of tripodness here and there. I guess any more professional-looking shots and I'd feel like it was "work"!

3) I watched the entire 3 seasons of MadMen during the last half of December. I didn't want to get hooked on another show/time sink but I'm glad I did. I should have been TiVo'ing it all along! Could have bought a load of stuff from JCrew for all the amazon purchased episodes, DOH.

4) I'm an early riser and try to meditate / mini-yoga throughout the day. My office mates are used to it.

5) I like to blast songs from Gossip Girl and rock out when I cook. HA!

6) I seriously post every single thing I buy clothing/accessory (and often home goods)-wise on this blog. It's like going to confession, but it happens a lot more than Sunday. It's also so when I'm broke I can browse through old posts and get a thrill. Just kidding. Sort of! The JCrew list of everything really does wonders on curbing the twitch for new arrivals.

7) I used to not return anything. I mean, REALLY. until I was 25 and discovered shopping blogs that subsequently caused me to WANT SO MANY pretty things, especially from JCrew, where I could order and return with such convenience.

I didn't use to have the time to shop, let alone go BACK to return. (Begs the question so why am I making the time now?) I am trying really hard to get back there, but sometimes I just avoid dressing rooms and approximate so end up having to return later. I just can't stand waiting in lines when I'm supposed to be doing something fun/productive for my wardrobe!

Leather pants! McQ! and Double Rings!

I have multiple style personalities. Architectural elements/ rockerish downtown/ justplaingirly. This week I crossed a big "want to find" off my rockerish downtown list. Leather pants. I know, I saw the hilarious Friends episode with Ross. I still wanted them. For about the past 15 years, not majorly stalking or hunting, just being aware if I ever saw a non-trashy slim black non-pleathery pair.

These at Kenneth Cole were at the $100 mark. They're now on sale even more, but my size is out. (If you're a size 10, jeezus, $70 for lined leather classic normally $400 pants? Go!)

I am liiiitle mad at Kenneth Cole for leading me on that I had a yummy ash grey leather clutch for $30 in my cart as I entered my CC info and then it disappeared AFTER I pressed the final "submit". and then they charged me shipping. Not the best CS in past experience either. but, I found my pants.

wow. whoever returned these to anthro, THANK YOU. Quite a few of my highly coveted pieces, now on sale, and in my closet! I had it on my "highly non-urgent to do list" to try some of these on, and before I could even get there they were marked down. I left some notes about what else was around (as I spent a LOOOT of time sorting thru the racks!)

Find #1: Embroidered Thicket Blouse by Floreat. I wanted this BAD the moment it came out in the December catalogue, but I haven't been to anthro since, um, November, except for some quick catalog returns. From calling around, there are a smattering of sz2's in Irvine, CA and Roseville, CA.

I got a sz2 (sized up) because well, they didn't have a 0, but I'm not bothering to do a store search for a sz0 because I prefer breezy drapey fit over "will this rip if I bend down to pick something?". On me, the waistband sits at my belly button, which I prefer over the empire-ey waist fit I'd get (and the ballooning out of the hips) if I sized down.

The material itself is really nicely textured too. $89.95 and orig. $178. Yayyyy!

while I do like Ideeli A LOT, it bugs that they never announce ahead of time when the sales are. (I'm not THAT stalkerish to check every morning). Luckily these were left in my size (and now my Ideeli Credit is officially g-o-n-e).

ooooh, oooooh, grabby hands. I wanted this one bad and now it's coming (albeit in a small, not an XS) for not $360, but a lovely palatable $103! The search for the perfect double breasted black coat to replace my lost JCrew one is over! I love that I don't see a lot of Soia and Kyo around here, and the quality is top notch.
